– First-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits showed a notable decrease in the week ended July 9th, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Thursday, although claims remained just above the key 400,000 level.
The report showed that initial jobless claims fell by 22,000 to 405,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 427,000. Economists had been expecting jobless claims to drop to 405,000 from the 418,000 originally reported for the previous week.

In a phone call today with the Taxpayer Advocate in Philadelphia, I learned that the IRS Service Center in Philadelphia moved, with the final personnel moving into the “new” office in January. The new address is:
Internal Revenue Service 2970 Market St. Philadelphia, PA 19104
Note that this address should be used only for overnight delivery, courier service, etc.; all other mail to the Philadelphia Service Center should go to the normal address (typically specified in the communication from the IRS).
The Philadelphia Service Center does not process returns; however, they do handle numerous “back-office” tasks including correspondence audits, international adjustments, and many others.

The state’s largest bank recorded a total of $661.5 million in credit and debit card sales transactions statewide, compared to $612.6 million in the second quarter of 2010. The bank’s report covers merchant transactions in 16 sectors of Hawaii’s economy, including hotels, automotive, utilities, medical services and home improvement. A total of 14 out of the 16 sectors saw year-over-year increases compared to the second quarter of 2010.
Transactions at convenience stores saw the largest year-over-year increase: That sector recorded $14.9 million in transactions in the 2011 second quarter, up 19.4 percent from last year’s $12.5 million. The hot
